They also have a nasty bite, so if you see one, steer clear and call in professionals.

Garden Mole

Pest infestations aren’t confined to the home. They can also affect your garden, and moles are one of the biggest pests around – although it’s fun to see the hills they create in the countryside, it’s less amusing when those hills are appearing on your lawn. Moles can ruin your grass and your plants by digging tunnels underneath them and therefore not allowing their roots the space to grow. If you have a mole problem and you take pride in your garden’s appearance, it needs to be fixed immediately.

Rabbits

Rabbits are largely nocturnal, so you may never see them in your garden or on your land. A few signs to look out for in the daylight hours are:

Woodworms

Woodworm can strike when you least expect it. Although they’re harmless when they’re outside, they present a huge problem if they get into your house. They will bore through any wood they can find, from furniture legs to structural support beams, and any infestation should therefore be dealt with as soon as possible.

Spiders

The most telling sign that you have a spider infestation in a building is the presence of a web (or multiple webs). Make sure that you clear away webs regularly, both to deter spider activity and so you can see when new webs have been made. One or two webs don’t necessarily suggest an infestation, but if you see lots of webs, then you should contact us to check for any spiders.

Cockroach

If you see one cockroach, you can assume there are many more. Other signs of cockroaches are droppings that look like black pepper granules and emit a strong smell. Usually cockroaches are nocturnal but can be seen in the daytime, particularly if it’s a large infestation.

Cockroaches carry diseases such as salmonella, typhoid and dysentery and any sign of cockroaches should be dealt with by professionals immediately.

Bees

Bees create their nests in hollow logs, trees, chimneys, wall voids, and structural wood. Their hives are comb-like in nature and often contain honey. While bees are important to the environment, having them on your property can be dangerous and a liability.

Squirrels

The most common issue that people have with squirrels occurs when they decide to nest in the loft space. Once this has happened, the area becomes their territory and they will act aggressively towards anyone who attempts to move them, especially if they have babies in the nest. If you try and block their access point, they will attack the blockage until they get in.

Fox / Vixen

Although foxes were formerly found in rural areas, they have made the towns and cities of the US their home, not least because of the amount of waste we throw away. As natural scavengers, they know that we are good sources of food and they’re unlikely to give up the easy life modern life has provided them with. Unfortunately, this leads some to become bold – they visit certain gardens repeatedly and even enter properties through catflaps and open doors.

Moths

The two most common types of moths are:

  • Clothes and carpet moths – the larvae of clothes moths eat through and cause damage to fabrics such as wool, cotton and carpets.

  • Food moths – food or ‘pantry’ moths eat stored food products in kitchens and larder storage areas.

You will know that you have a moth infestation by noticing the damage that they have caused to fabrics or you will see them.

Flies

Infestations of flies can grow quickly and can cause serious hygiene issues. Flies carry and spread diseases including salmonella and E-coli, which are a concern to both homeowners and businesses.

Depending on the species of fly, the most effective ways to eradicate them are fogging or fumigation.

We also use a residual chemical that will continue working for weeks after the initial treatment. This residual chemical will ensure our treatment is long-lasting and that flies don’t return.

Gulls / Seabirds

Seagulls are a nuisance and can be very intimidating to humans, particularly during their nesting season.

They can be found in various locales throughout the US, and In Touch Pest Control has a variety of solutions to remove them from your property.

Silverfish

The name, silverfish, derives from their silvery, light grey colour and fish-like movements. People tend to see these small, wingless insects as a nuisance, rather than a threat; however they are unhygienic, especially in large numbers. If left alone, they may breed. This can soon lead to infestations in kitchens, bathrooms and other areas of the house as they seek food, usually sugary items.

Ladybugs

As far as pests are concerned, ladybirds are generally considered some of the tamest. It’s true that when they’re by themselves, they are harmless to people, animals and property – however, if they nest in large numbers within your home, they can become a major nuisance.

Flea infestation
  • Bites – fleas bite humans and pets to feed on blood so they can lay eggs.

  • Pets scratching – fleas will often make a home in the fur of your dog or cat, causing them discomfort.

  • Sightings – fleas are very small (approx. 1mm), but sometimes can be seen, particularly when a property is empty.
