Engine Oil Cap

I designed a custom engine oil cap for an LS-based engine by General Motors. This was my first time trying to make a plastic part survive engine temperatures like the OEM plastic parts do. It took a lot of trial and error and even some post-processing techniques to increase stiffness, heated resistance, and reduce shrinkage.

I made this in SolidWorks, and it took 9 revisions to get the perfect airtight seal that would last after testing. Another challenge was to make the locking mechanism nice and smooth while restraining a nice, confident locking feel. An unexpected challenge was to make the locking and sealing mechanism just as easy to remove when the car is hot as it is cold. This was one of the issues of the OEM cap, I achieved this by testing a different O-ring land design.
